I LISTEN: I have worked with clients from different cultures and communities. I believe that by listening carefully and helping my patients feel heard and understood, I can better determine the best steps to address their challenges, and we can collaborate to make progress together.Blood Work
Mental health symptoms can sometimes be linked to underlying physical conditions. Ordering blood tests helps rule out deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and other medical issues that may affect mood, behavior, and cognition.Commonly checked markers include:
- Vitamin D, B, Folate, and Iron Levels: Linked to fatigue, low mood, and cognitive challenges
- Thyroid Function: Used to identify hormone-related emotional symptoms. Monitoring thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) levels is crucial to ensure proper thyroid function. An imbalance can cause symptoms such as depression, fatigue, and cognitive challenges, which may mimic or worsen mental health conditions.
- Glucose and Metabolic Markers: Used for overall physical health screening
- Psycho-Pharmacogenetic Testing: Helps determine how a patient’s genetic makeup affects their response to specific medications. This guides recommendations for the safest and most effective treatments with fewer side effects, reducing the trial-and-error approach.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC): Helps identify biological contributors to mental distress, including conditions like anemia or infections, which may contribute to or exacerbate psychiatric symptoms.
- Cortisol Levels: Cortisol is a hormone associated with the body’s stress response. Dysregulation has been linked to anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Toxicology Screen: Determines whether drugs or toxins are present in the body. Substances such as cocaine and amphetamines can cause mood swings, lability, irritability, and unspecified psychosis with behavioral disturbances.
